Similarities and Differences between Whale, Dolphin and Porpoise Echolocation Sounds

In this activity, students explore whale, dolphin and porpoise echolocation sounds to identify characteristics that are common to toothed whales as well as determine how individual species are different. Students graph data, summarize their results, and make conclusions linking their data to biology. 

Grade Level: Middle and High School

Approximate Time: 45-60 minutes


Materials Needed: 
  • Computer with Audacity software installed
